From M&A strategy to data-centric innovations: Qlik’s plan to shape a data-centric world

As data management continues to evolve at a rapid pace, this week’s QlikWorld event in Las Vegas brought together industry experts to discuss the data explosion and the role of independent companies, such as QlikTech International AB, in shaping the future of data.

“We’re shifting from a world that is application-centric, where the data is locked inside the app, locked inside the business logic, to one that is data-centric, where the business logic and the metadata are going to reside on top of the data, not the other way around,” said industry analyst Dave Vellante (pictured, right). “The data becomes first. That’s what data-first means to me.”

Vellante and Lisa Martin (left), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, wrapped up theCUBE’s coverage of QlikWorld 2023 in Las Vegas with in-depth market analysis. They discussed the shift toward a data-centric world and discussed Qlik’s role in shaping the future of data intelligence. (* Disclosure below.)

Exploring the future of data intelligence

While acknowledging the limitations of current data platforms like Snowflake, Databricks and Amazon Redshift, Vellante and Martin discussed Qlik’s M&A strategy and its focus on customer affinities, culture and technical fit.

“I have no doubt that a company like [Qlik], who’s so good at M&A, is going to get there. Some things have to be invented … these guys aren’t there yet,” Vellante said.

As the industry moves toward a data-centric world, the importance of data intelligence, including lineage, access, provenance and compliance, takes center stage. Ensuring the data is private, trusted and discoverable is also critical.

“Data is going to be distributed; only move it to a centralized repository when you have to,” Vellante added.

TheCUBE analysts also presented some crystal-ball predictions, including possible new models and integration.

“I think they’ve got to be showing something on AI and ML and foundation models,” Vellante stated. “I think there’ll be a lot of really hardcore data integration stuff that … customers are going to love.

As the data management industry evolves rapidly, and companies like Qlik are at the forefront of the transformation, new technologies will continue to emerge and the enterprise landscape will evolve quickly. For now, the future of data intelligence is full of possibilities, and theCUBE analysts continue to monitor what comes next.

“I think we’re just cracking the surface on that. I think this is an interesting space to watch,” Martin said.
