Location intelligence system optimizes delivery experience

With the growing demand for online shopping, short delivery times are important in order to maintain client satisfaction. Timelines have evolved over time from two-day delivery to next-day, then same-day, and eventually into a 10-minute fulfillment scenario.

Mapping tools company Mapbox Inc. aims to solve this problem by providing users with information that allows them to deliver products to customers as quickly as possible.

“There is a massive movement to shorter and shorter delivery windows,” said Garrett Miller (pictured), the general manager of navigation at Mapbox.

The pandemic demand for delivery increased the number of “ghost kitchens” — restaurants that do not have a physical storefront but solely offer kitchen and point-of-sales transactions. Consequently, Mapbox had to discover optimal routes to get customers their hot food within minutes.

Miller spoke with industry analyst John Furrier during last year’s AWS Summit San Francisco event about how Mapbox leverages technologies to create a seamless delivery experience for customers. (* Disclosure below.)

How did Mapbox optimize the routes?

The company recently introduced Mapbox Fleet, which allows customers to route their vehicles more efficiently to lower fuel consumption. It also helps them understand how to get more packages delivered in a single vehicle to reduce the carbon footprint. And with the help of Amazon Web Services Inc. technologies, Mapbox is able to scale its business according to fluctuating needs, according to Miller.

“It all starts with collecting billions and billions of data points from sensors that are out there in the world. We stream that into our technology stack starting at the very beginning with Amazon Kinesis,” he said.

Amazon manages the underlying infrastructure for Mapbox so it can simply focus on building their business. And artificial intelligence and machine learning play a large role in building the application for the company, Miller added. By using sensor data to capture the number of miles driven by customers, they are able to view insights into road conditions. This allows them to create a more accurate representation of the real world to further improve their service.

Recently, Mapbox launched an EV routing API that powers the new generation of electric vehicles. The company leverages AI and ML technologies to introduce more sustainable and environmentally conscious solutions that help to transform the industry and the planet, according to Miller.
