Uber Freight teams with WattEV and CHEP for electric truck pilot program

Uber Freight LLC, Watt Electric Vehicle Co. Inc. and CHEP today announced their first electric truck pilot program on select routes in Southern California.

As part of the pilot program, WattEV will provide electric trucking capacity to Uber Freight shippers, starting with CHEP, which is incorporated as Brambles Ltd. The pilot program is said to serve as an important milestone in electric freight transportation and establishes Uber Freight’s first electric vehicle deployment.

The pilot program is designed to provide stakeholders with valuable insight into the logistical complexities of electrifying freight transportation. The program combines Uber Freight’s expansive network of digitally-enabled carriers with WattEV’s electric fleet and charging infrastructure network. CHEP is the first shipper to participate in the pilot, prioritizing electric capacity on the Southern California route.

The pilot also builds on WattEV’s mission to develop a nationwide network of heavy-duty charging facilities that will serve fleets of electric trucks. Via the Uber Freight platform, CHEP will book, schedule and complete loads, track status and load key performance indicators and manage all paperwork in one place.

“Electric trucks are finally here and we’re proud to partner with WattEV to offer Uber Freight shippers even more ways to move freight more sustainably,” Uber Freight Head of Sustainability Illina Frankiv said in a statement. “Electric trucks will have a profound impact on logistics, and we’re excited to build the technology platform to enable their seamless integration into supply chains.”

Launched in 2017, Uber Freight is now said to offer one of the largest networks of digitally enabled carriers with leading logistics technology and transportation services. Although Uber is the main shareholder in the company, Uber Freight is a separate company that has raised direct funding of $2.7 billion, according to Crunchbase, from investors including D1 Capital Partners L.P, GCM Grosvenor Inc., Abu Dhabi Growth Fund L.P., Greenbriar Equity Group LLC and Techstars Central LLC.

WattEV is also a venture capital-backed company, having raised $75 million from investors, including the South Coast Air Quality Management District, Southern California Association of Governments, the California Energy Commission and Canon Equity LLC.
