HPE’s platform-focused approach seeks solutions for edge use cases

For a cloud service provider like Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co., building out its platform to attract collaborators is key.

And the company’s recently appointed chief technology officer is already hard at work bolstering its effort to that end.

“HPE is a partner-first organization, and that helps us get our breadth and our scale across the globe,” said Fidelma Russo (pictured, right), CTO of HPE. “And so we are working closely with a number of our partners to build tightly into the platform exposing our APIs. Then in terms of other areas, we’ll have our marketplace and they’ll be there for consumption. So, it’s a ‘with and through partners’ situation.”

Russo and Latha Vishnubhotla (pictured, left), chief platform officer of HPE. spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and John Furrier at the HPE Discover 2022 eventduring an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the strategies at HPE for customers’ distributed computing and infrastructure security needs. (* Disclosure below.)

Driving value at the edge

Society is in the midst of a data explosion, and this reality has forced companies to rethink the management of their now-distributed enterprises. “Cloud-to-edge,” as HPE likes to call it, will involve a profound reliance on application programming interfaces to drive value, according to Vishnubhotla.

“First of all, an API-first approach is very key so that our [vendors] and partners can develop on top of it,” she said. “APIs are very key, and so is security, building security from hardware all the way to the services and the whole stack — integrating security into that and providing the ease of use features on top of it.”

In a move to consolidate its outward-facing structure, HPE highlighted four key components during its event keynote: core services, operating use, roles and commerce. Each one serves to simplify a particular aspect of operations for the customer.

Keeping track of spending can be very important for developers and operations, so that’s built directly into the company’s cloud console with cost analytics, as well as billing, Russo explained. As a result, customers can get full visibility into every part of their operation, curated by their role, but at the same time a top-down view of how it affects them.

“So, today, it’s billing, and we’ve also brought the buy experience on there, so you can now go to the console, you can do your first purchase there,” Russo said. “You get all of the billing and visibility into your bills through the platform.”
