Pure Storage adds sustainability assessment tools to its flash storage arrays

The data storage company Pure Storage Inc. said today it’s taking steps to help customers reach their sustainability goals with the addition of new analytics tools in its server hardware.

The Pure1 Sustainability Assessment feature gives companies increased visibility into the environmental impact of their data center operations, along with recommendations on steps they can take to reduce their energy consumption and improve their carbon footprint.

Available on Pure’s FlashBlade//S family of flash storage arrays and older products, the new tool provides detailed information via its power saving analysis, which shows the energy each array is using compared to its nominal power load. Customers can monitor power consumption efficiency for a single array, or an entire data center fleet.

Pure1 Sustainability Assessment also features a greenhouse gas emissions monitor that estimates carbon emissions based on the power consumption of each array. And it provides tools for customers to assess ways in which they can improve power efficiency by metering watts per unit of data on each array. Using all of this data, Pure1 Sustainability Assessment can then make some calculations under the hood and provide proactive insights and guidance to help customers improve their carbon footprint.

Pure Storage said the new features are part of an ongoing drive to improve sustainability. It said its latest FlashBlade//S storage arrays have twice as much power efficiency as its previous-generation hardware, thanks to innovations such as its DirectFlash technology, always-on deep compression and Evergreen architecture.

The company also published the results of recent sustainability analyses that followed the Life Cycle Assessments formula across its full portfolio of storage arrays. It claims that its flagship FlashArray//X delivers direct energy savings of 84.7% versus competitive products, while its FlashArray//XL produced savings of 80%. The hybrid FlashArray//C delivered 75% energy savings versus competing products, according to the analysis.

A number of Pure Storage’s customers testified in support of the company’s claims, including the U.S. educational content provider Cengage Group.

“Running our organization on Pure Storage FlashArray, FlashBlade, Pure1 and Evergreen//One, has not only enabled us to significantly improve the storage performance and data accessibility needed to deliver on this mission, but it has also allowed us to save on space, power, and cooling,” said Cengage Chief Information Officer Jim Chilton. “In fact, we’ve been able to reduce our overall storage footprint by 80% while doubling to tripling the performance of our previous storage systems.”

Pure Storage said the Pure1 Sustainability Assessment features are being rolled out across its full portfolio of data storage arrays starting today.
