Maintaining 24/7 accessibility, five nines (or more) uptime, and combating the constant threat of cyberattack means fast incident response is business-critical. And although the days of on-call engineers wearing pagers have faded into the past, the incessant ping of alerts is a modern developer’s Pavlovian hell.
Automated incident response, or AIR, tools that identify and solve recurrent issues can simplify and speed a company’s reaction when problems occur, increasing resilience and taking the pressure off stressed infrastructure and operations teams. As an added plus, these solutions also provide incident postmortem reports to help predict and avoid similar events in the future.

AIOps and beyond
Although still low, AIR adoption levels are on the rise as companies realize the importance of incident response to both customer satisfaction and data security. Only 5% of the teams surveyed in 2021 used AIR tools, but the figure is predicted to rise to 30% by 2025, according to Gartner Inc. research.
“Traditional incident response approaches involve manual processes with limited collaboration between teams and slow response time,” stated Hassan Ennaciri, senior director analyst of infrastructure and operations at Gartner, in his recent SiliconANGLE guest column, titled “Five trends to build digital platforms for adaptive resilience in 2022.”
“Incident response is a staple automation opportunity — allowing organizations to map automated responses to specific incidents,” he added.
On-call notification nightmares are amplified by the many point tools companies use in order to monitor the complexity of a hybrid, multicloud environment. By linking these solutions into an interoperation toolchain abstracted through an orchestration layer, PagerDuty’s automated incident response platform helps release teams from the complexity of manually managing and coordinating these multiple solutions.
With a research and development budget that outstrips its marketing and sales spend almost two to one, new products, added features and solution upgrades are always a major part of PagerDuty’s annual summit. TheCUBE will be on the lookout for announcements in PagerDuty’s key focus areas of automated incident response, AIOps, process automation and business operations.
“Our digital operations platform is designed to effectively predict, facilitate and automate the urgent, unstructured work essential to modern business success,” Jennifer Tejada, PagerDuty founder and chief executive, told theCUBE in March.
The company’s fourth-quarter fiscal 2022 financial report showed a revenue rise of 32% year-over-year with figures of $79 million for the quarter and $281 million for the year. This places the company in line with its competitors in what is a growing market, according to Constellation Research Inc. analyst Andy Thurai.
“Forced digital operations maturity gives enterprises no option but to get a solution like PagerDuty to keep the lights on,” he told SiliconANGLE.
The convergence of AIR, AIOps, security and observability solutions has spawned a crowded and confused arena, where startups and established players jockey for their share of a predicted $68.15 billion market. Its strong enterprise adoption may give PagerDuty an edge. Over 60% of the Fortune 100 use its enterprise-class platform, and the company’s customer list includes Allstate Insurance, IBM, Albertsons Companies, Cox Automotive and Shopify.
But PagerDuty’s key to success over the next year depends on “faster and focused execution,” according to Thurai.
