New Clumio service provides air gap ransomware protection for AWS EC2 and EBS

Enterprise data backup provider Clumio Inc. today announced the availability of a new cost-effective air gap ransomware protection solution, Clumio SecureVault Lite, for Amazon Web Services Inc. EC2 compute service and its EBS elastic block storage service.

SecureVault Lite is pitched as allowing enterprises to no longer have to choose between ransomware protection and cost reduction. Clumio’s new service is claimed to deliver 30% savings with AWS integration at a similar cost as local in-account Amazon EBS snapshots.

Clumio claims that its new solution makes achieving air gap ransomware protection more affordable and ensures all data is securely protected, no matter what security challenges arise.

The solution addresses enterprises needing data protection that defends application data outside the organization’s access control domain to ensure business continuity in the cloud. Clumio argues that although the cloud operating model enables customers to innovate at a pace never seen before, it can also result in unbridled usage and additional complexity for customers to manage.

Clumio SecureVault Lite for Amazon EC2 and EBS benefits include affordably priced backups, reducing the cost of protecting critical application data by up to 30% compared with replicating or vaulting snapshots in alternate accounts. The cost optimization enables air gap protection at a similar or less cost than an account snapshot alone.

The service offers ransomware and bad-actor protection since the backups are stored outside the customer’s AWS account, wholly separated from the production environment. Customer data is stored on immutable storage and is encrypted both at rest and in flight, with the ability for customers to bring their own keys. Additionally, Clumio provides multifactor authentication with single-sign-on integration, access controls for assets and roles, and a no-delete button.

On the compliance side, Clumio provides simple and intuitive reports that are compliant with HIPAA, PCI DSS, ISO 27001 and AICPA SOC. Clumio SecureVault Lite is also optimized for backup and recovery leveraging deep integrations with AWS native services at large scale and provides a simple calendar view to find all recovery points.

“With the increased threat of ransomware and insider attacks to organizations’ business-critical data in the cloud, implementing a cloud data protection strategy that delivers air-gapped, immutable backups has become table stakes,” Poojan Kumar (pictured), chief executive officer of Clumio, said in a statement. “Many organizations were invariably faced with the tough task of selecting between security and reducing cloud spend. With the addition of Clumio SecureVault Lite to our platform, we are eliminating the need to make this choice and truly making air-gapped backups in AWS effortless and accessible to all.”

Clumio SecureVault Lite backups start at 3.5 cents per gigabyte per month with a 30-day minimum retention requirement. Restores are priced at four cents per gigabyte.
