What to expect during “Application Modernization” event: Join theCUBE for May 18 event

During the pandemic, digital transformation became an essential survival tactic rather than a nice-to-have competitive advantage. Now, as companies assess the altered business landscape, the work of shaping those hastily-created transformations into long-term digital business strategies is taking priority.

Eighty-eight percent of information technology professionals say their organization’s digital transformation goals have “fundamentally changed” compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic. Of that 88%, 95% have accelerated their application modernization strategies and 93% expect operational changes implemented as a response to the pandemic to become permanent.

“As we enter the post isolation era, companies are taking a more planned approach to modernization and that means aligning with the business and developing flexible data platform strategies,” said Dave Vellante, chief research officer of Wikibon Inc. and theCUBE industry analyst. “Those organizations that can shift quickly will be in front.”

On May 18, theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, and database-as-a-service provider Couchbase Inc. will host a discussion on “Application Modernization.” During the livestream, industry analysts and application modernization experts will assess how trends in digital transformation affect enterprise modernization, suggest practical ways to accelerate the modernization process, and provide use-case examples of modernization benefits. Digital transformation is a company-wide initiative

Spending on digital transformation is on the rise, with companies planning on spending 46% more on digital transformation initiatives in the next 12 months than in 2021, according to the Couchbase survey. While this is positive, 81% of organizations had at least one project that failed, suffered serious delay, or had to be scaled back in 2021. This cost each company an average of $4.12 million.

Ensuring that the funding is allocated efficiently means a mindset change from the fast implementations of the pandemic. Organizations need a cohesive transformation strategy that builds on the lessons of the past two years, and information technology executives need to make sure that new technologies are implemented with input from executives across the company to ensure they meet the company’s overall strategic goals.

“We are entering a period of extreme creativity as organizations shift from digital transformation driven by reacting to outside events, such as the pandemic or competitors’ progress, to a more proactive approach driven by ideas from within the business,” according to Ravi Mayuram, senior vice president of engineering and chief technology officer of Couchbase.

DBaaS market shows exponential growth

A major roadblock for traditional enterprises entering the digital era is the sprawl of existing infrastructure that has been built up over decades. Rapid transformations built a whitewash of cloud on top, which fulfilled the immediate issues of remote accessibility for customers and employees. But as their digital evolution continues, companies are restricted by this underlying technology, which is too slow and cumbersome to handle the demands of modern applications.

Cloud-based databases delivered through the as-a-service model can offer a solution. Designed for high-performance and low-latency requirements of cloud-native applications, database-as-a-service platforms provide scalability and flexibility without the capex costs of upgrading on-premises data centers. This has made DBaaS a popular choice for enterprise modernization, with the global cloud database and DBaaS market projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 62% from $13.6 billion in 2020 to $399.5 billion by 2027.

Not surprisingly, traditional database providers are rolling out DBaaS offerings. The most recent Gartner Magic Quadrant shows Amazon Web Service, Microsoft, Oracle and Google in the top right of a crowded leaders quarter. Couchbase, which offers the Capella DBaaS, leads the niche players.

“It comes down to the fact that the data needs to be where you are engaging with it. That is a fundamental shift in terms of how modern architecture needs to think when it comes to digital transformation. That’s the problem we are solving, this modernization of the data infrastructure,” Mayuram told theCUBE.
