Watch live analysis on the ‘Data as Code’ movement, April 5

Even the largest companies in the world are struggling to deliver on a data strategy.

This conclusion was among the findings of a 2021 survey jointly conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Databricks Inc. Over 350 organizations earning at least $1 billion in revenue were surveyed, with only 13% reporting data strategy success.

TheCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, and Amazon Web Services Inc. will examine how an ecosystem of startup companies is offering new ways for enterprises to manage data in cloud-native systems during the AWS Startup Showcase: “Data as Code: The Future of Enterprise Data and Analytics” event, airing on April 5, starting at 10 a.m. PT. (* Disclosure below.)

Centralizing data for analytics

The struggle to deliver measurable results was partly attributed by survey respondents to difficulty in deriving value from machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies for data analytics. Companies found the most significant challenge was the lack of a central repository for storing and discovering machine learning models.

This has been a key focus among cloud-native startups building business models around an emerging cloud-first ecosystem. The latest in a series of Startup Showcase programs jointly developed by AWS and theCUBE will feature entrepreneurs with innovative solutions for realigning the enterprise approach to data management. The “Data as Code: The Future of Enterprise Data and Analytics” event will air on April 5 and feature experts from the AWS ecosystem, including Rockset, Cribl, Imply Data, CartoDB, Mux, Nexla, Ahana and Dremio.

Nexla Inc. provides an instructive example of how the startup ecosystem is responding to the data analytics challenge documented in the MIT/Databricks report. Its initial customers have been larger enterprise firms with Eddie Bauer, Forever 21 and DoorDash among the company’s current clients. Nexla is building a data platform to bring the integration, preparation and monitoring of data into one place. The company is focused on streamlining the process of feeding data to applications without the necessity of multiple tools.

The team at Nexla was involved in the data explosion prior to starting the company. CEO Saket Saurabh previously launched Mobsmith, a mobile ad server for the advertising industry.

“We’d built a system to process more than 300 billion data records daily and applied it with machine learning to ad auctions,” explained Saurabh, during a recent interview. “Knowing that the need for modern data processing was coming to many industries inspired us to start Nexla.”

Leveraging power of geodata

Another area of growth involves geodata, information generated by the rise of GPS and satellite systems that produce reams of spatial tracking data.

CartoDB Inc. is focused on more scalable and efficient data analysis by bringing cloud-native spatial analytics to businesses seeking to harness geodata for a wide range of initiatives. The company’s solution uses an SQL-driven spatial data analysis process to unlock insight from foot or road traffic, weather and financial data to help businesses fine-tune operational and sales strategies.

AWS’ cloud platform powers Carto’s spatial analytics and geographic integration system mapping technologies to encourage more businesses to dive into a new world of spatial data analysis.

“With AWS, now we can do analysis at a scale that wasn’t possible before,” said Javier de la Torre, founder and chief strategy officer of Carto, during an interview with theCUBE in advance of the Startup Showcase event. “Carto is part of that transition to necessity, making spatial analytics part of general analytics. We’ve seen democratization of spatial analytics to a much wider audience.”
